The process begins with site preparation and foundation construction. A deep hole, typically 1.5 to 2 meters deep, is drilled and filled with reinforced concrete to create a stable base capable of withstanding high wind loads and potential vehicle impacts. Electrical wiring and component installation are the next critical phases. The pole must be equipped with a handhole or access panel at the base for connecting underground cables. Wires are threaded through the interior of the hollow pole to the luminaire (light fixture) at the top. A photoelectric cell or timer is installed to automate the switching of the lights based on ambient light levels. For high-mast lighting, a winch system is often integrated into the pole to allow the luminaire to be lowered for maintenance without requiring a crane. All electrical connections must be waterproofed and grounded to prevent short circuits and ensure safety during storms. The installation of the luminaire itself involves securing it with heavy-duty bolts and aiming it at the correct angle to maximize road coverage while minimizing glare for oncoming drivers.
Final inspection and testing are mandatory before the system is energized. The integrity of the weld seams, the tightness of the anchor bolts, and the resistance of the galvanized coating are checked. A megger test is performed on the electrical circuits to ensure insulation resistance meets code requirements. After energization, a "dark sky" compliance check may be conducted to ensure the light is directed downward and does not contribute to light pollution. Regular maintenance guidelines should be established, including periodic cleaning of the glass covers, checking for corrosion at the base, and replacing bulbs or LED modules. Properly installed highway light poles provide decades of reliable service, significantly enhancing nighttime driving safety.
